Different types of VNC?

I have started to learn about VNC and have gone as far as getting my hands on uVNC and configuring/using it. It feel very much like my typical remote desktop software. I thought I had seen a type of VNC that connected to the network without opening a new window (kind of like using the remote internet connection via your local machine and UI) does this sound familiar to anyone or am i totally just thinking of something random?
